The Legend Of The Iron Wolf

There is a legend that surrounds the founding of Vilnius, the present day capital of Lithuania. Legend has it The Grand Duke of Lithuania, Gediminas, went on a hunting trip in the holy woods of the Valley of Sventaragis. Tired after a successful day of hunting, the Grand Duke settled for the night near a hill at the convergence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. He fell asleep soundly and had a dream. A huge iron wolf was standing on top of this hill and the sound of hundreds of other wolves inside it filled all the surrounding fields and woods. After the hunting trip, Gediminas went back to Trakai (the capital of Lithuania at that time) and consulted the pagan priest (oracle), Lizdeika, to reveal the secrets behind the dream. And the priest told him: “What is destined for the ruler and the state of Lithuania, let it be: The iron wolf means a formidable castle and town which will be established by the ruler on this site. The city will stand as strong as iron and its walls will protect the land from its enemies.

Gediminas heeded and pleased with the priest’s reveal of his dream. He began to summon artisans and craftsmen around the country and Europe to design and construct his new strong and beautiful kingdom, which would surround this hill where he had the dream of the iron wolf. Upon the completion Gediminas moved his home, signaling the establishment of a new capital for his country: Vilnius.

Now in the present time, the western tower of the upper Gediminas Castle still stands at the top of this hill in Vilnius. As well as at the bottom of the hill, stands the statue of Gediminas and the iron wolf in Gediminas Square.

The legend of the White Lady

Nearly a century ago the king of Duino in Italy killed his wife by pushing her out of a window. He thought that she was expecting a child from another man, but then he realized it was all a lie.

While Stefanie was falling into the dark sea she screamed so much that God felt pity for her and decided to transform her into a rock and make here wander for all the coming centuries. She now is still looking for her child. If you listen very well you can hear her screaming and also see her walking up and down. So now if you look at the cliffs in the sea you can see a rock that has the shape of a ghost. That is the ghost of Stefanie…… In Italian her name is: la “Dama Bianca” the “White Lady”.

Devils wedding

A musician was walking along the road, coming home late from a country party. He meets a man. The man asks the musician: “Come be our wedding musician, we will pay you generously, so long as you don’t break out in laughter”.

The man took the musician to a house, all lit lights, with many people, all drinking and being festive. When the musician started to play, young women and men appeared as if from nowhere, even the bride came out, her hair all decorated with flowers. The musician played, and all the guests danced, and while dancing, they would always veer off to the side, poke their fingers into a pot and smudge something over their eyes. The musician grew curious as to what was going on, and lurking away to the side when nobody was watching, dipped his finger into the pot and smudged one eye. Suddenly, peering with that one eye, he saw that this was no wedding but a devils gathering! (Lithuanian folk tale)

Snow White And The Seven Dwarves

Once upon a time, a child was born to a queen and king and she was called Snow White.

Sadly the queen died and the king married again. This new queen was wicked and was jealous of Snow White. The queen gave orders that Snow White was treated as a servant.

Snow White grew very beautiful and one day a Prince saw her at work and fell in love with her.

The queen was beautiful too, and every day she asked her Magic Mirror, “Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?” and the mirror always answered, “You are the fairest one of all”.

But one day the mirror answered Snow White was the fairest in the land

The queen did not want Snow White to be more beautiful than her and in a rage the queen gave orders to one of her Huntsmen to take Snow White into the woods and kill her.

The Huntsman had a kind heart and couldn’t do the deed so told her to run away. Snow White ran and ran, through the woods, till she came to a little cottage.

The cottage was strange and very small. Snow White entered the little house and finding it very untidy, started to clean up.

Upstairs she found seven little beds. She was very tired and stretching out on one of the beds, was soon asleep.

The owners of the cottage returned, they were seven little dwarves.

The seven dwarves were very surprised to find a stranger asleep in their bedroom.

Snow White woke up but she was not afraid of the dwarves. She asked if she could stay with them, she would cook, clean and look after them. The dwarves agreed she could stay. Even though they had to start washing themselves and help to clean the cottage up.

That evening Snow White and the seven dwarves had a party to celebrate Snow White’s arrival.
